March 2010

I want to use this section of the site to blog about the process of change and where I personally have found a sense of inspiration and passion. It is not easy to move away from a set of thoughts and beliefs that one has held: habits are even harder. I feel into some bad eating habits and I thought, that because I was young, this would never catch up to me; and of course it did.

The process of change for me was mostly done out of fear that worse things could happen as the doctor had told me. He was straight forward and direct, which I appreciate about him as a professional. Spirituality is mostly about finding a right balance, andthat can be hard in a culture that mostly states that this super product will complete you.

Wellness Springs is the result of moving though some difficult times to a place where I can share what it is that I have learned with others who are in a similar place as me.

I was reading a quote from Dee Eddington, the researcher on Wellness at the University of Michigan. He said, when asked how to stop aperson from eating a hamburger, "I just say, Go ahead and have it, but here are your consequences. We have to get through to people with education and incentives. People have to understand that health is more than just the absence of sickness. Health is energy and vitality for yourself and for your children. That’s a social marketing thing". When I was working as a counselor, I could never stop people from making choices. I could however, inform them of the consequences of their choices, and then they can decide for themselves. He said something else in that article. He thought it was better to give people a pari of walking shoes in place of a gym membership. They can walk anywhere, but have to "go" to the gym.
